Design Mind Zine

For this endeavor, I undertook the design and production of a zine that serves as a visual exploration of the intricate workings of the design mind. With a focus on conveying my unique perspective, the zine delves into how I perceive the design process, unraveling the layers of thought and creativity that contribute to my approach.

In conceptualizing and executing this zine project, I deliberately chose two overarching themes, "Repurpose" and "Chaos," as two reflections of the workings of my design mind.

Part 1, "Repurpose," touches on the value found in creating from what already exists. Much of society is under the impression that in order to have something with worth, it has to be brand new. I like to oppose that thought by thinking you can create something beautiful and intricate by using things with a new purpose. This concept mirrors my creative process, which involves reimagining and repurposing elements to breathe new life into designs. The theme showcases how my mind instinctively seeks innovative solutions by repurposing existing concepts, materials, or ideas.

On the flip side, Part 2,"Chaos," captures the dynamic and sometimes unpredictable nature of my design thinking. Embracing disorder as a catalyst for creativity, this theme reflects my comfort with exploring unconventional ideas, pushing boundaries, and challenging the established norms. The chaotic elements within the zine visually represent the organized disorder that often fuels my most inventive moments.

By intertwining these two themes within the zine, I aim to provide viewers with a glimpse into the dichotomy of my design mind—finding beauty in chaos and discovering potential in repurposed concepts. The deliberate choice of these themes serves not only as a personal expression but also as an invitation for others to contemplate the beautiful interplay of creativity, adaptability, and unpredictability that defines the design process in my mind.

Assembly, Supplies, Craft

The physicality and craft of this zine project are a testament to resourcefulness and creativity, aligning seamlessly with the themes of "Repurpose" and "Chaos." To complement the content, a conscious decision was made to exclusively utilize materials already at hand, refraining from acquiring new resources. This choice not only aligns with sustainable practices but also adds a layer of personal history to the zine's construction.

The hardcover, crafted from leftover cardboard obtained from a class, exudes the spirit of "Repurpose." Covered in canvas paper and adorned with red ribbon, it becomes a canvas itself for repurposing materials. The incorporation of brass grommets, acquired years ago during sewing endeavors, adds a touch of history and repurposed functionality.

The pages, a diverse amalgamation of canvas sketching paper, printed materials, photographs, stamps, tape, ink, and block prints, echo the theme of "Chaos." The eclectic mix of elements, bound together by small chains, reflects the organized disorder inherent in creative exploration. Each page is a canvas for repurposing, where materials find new life within the chaotic yet harmonious structure.

Even the pink title and end pages contribute to the narrative of repurposing, originating from card stock acquired in a past office setting. The two-toned text created using the Riso printer adds a modern twist, blending elements of the past with contemporary techniques.

In essence, the assembly of this zine not only bring the themes of "Repurpose" and "Chaos" to life but also narrate a story of creativity, resourcefulness, and a deliberate choice to celebrate the existing materials in a beautiful, tactile representation of the design mind at work.
