Knowledge is Power

I crafted this stop-motion animation to advocate for the UN Sustainable Development Goal of Quality Education. This creative endeavor aims to shed light on the critical significance of ensuring access to quality education for all, with a particular focus on the widespread challenges faced by countless girls and women globally who are unjustly denied this opportunity. Through this piece, I sought to inspire awareness and action towards fostering equitable educational opportunities worldwide.

The Process

The Assignment

The project commenced with the random assignment of a UN Sustainable Development Goal, which happened to be 'Quality Education.' Given the goal, I promptly initiated exploring various approaches to address the issue. After careful consideration, I chose to concentrate on the global denial of education to women, shaping the project's thematic focus.

Storyboarding

I initiated the project by extensively searching for a spoken word poem on the chosen topic, investing several hours until discovering "The Importance of Education" by Telixia Inico. Subsequently, I meticulously edited the audio by removing background music and extracting specific segments of the poem. To enhance the auditory experience, I incorporated bass and multiple layers of guitar, crafting the melancholic track featured in the final product. Concurrently, I commenced the process of ideating storyboards to align with the created audio.

As I worked, I cut down the actual storyboard to only seven of the original ten frames I had originally drawn.

To achieve a collage-style aesthetic reminiscent of a young girl's diary or bedroom wall, I began by arranging a set of frames to visualize and define the desired aesthetic for the animation. This preliminary layout helped establish the tone and style that I aimed to capture throughout the project.

Creating

During the animation creation phase, I faced the challenge of establishing consistent lighting and camera positioning for ease of subsequent edits. After experimenting with various setups, I opted for a makeshift studio within one of the campus printing labs. Despite lacking a proper tripod or camera stand, I devised a functional yet unconventional setup that successfully addressed the issue.
